2008 Person of the Year: Obama named 2008 Person of the Year

Was there any doubt on who would be named TIME Person of the Year for 2008? In one of the most predictable 'Person of the Year' contests ever, Barack Obama was officially bestowed that title by Time Magazine. He was the clear choice of everyone and this result certainly was no surprise. It would have been a shock if Time gave the title to someone else. And that would have affected the magazine's credibility.

The magazine said Obama "has come to dominate the public sphere so completely that it beggars belief to recall that half the people in America had never heard of him two years ago." That is actually the gist of what Barack Obama is and what he has become. He was almost a nobody
many months ago, and now, after enduring a grueling presidential campaign that saw him rise from almost obscurity and champion the call for change in America, he is the President-elect of the United States, and poised to effect the change that Americans, and the rest of world, is waiting for.

In one of the craziest elections in American history, he overcame a lack of experience, a funny name, two candidates who are political institutions and the racial divide to become the 44th President of the United States.

Named as runners up to Barack Obama this year are Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson; French president Nicolas Sarkozy; Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin; and the Chinese film director, Zhang Yimou, who orchestrated the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympic Games.

Named to this year's list of 'People Who Mattered' were: Ingrid Betancourt, George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton, Robert Downey Jr., Tina Fey, Richard Fuld Jr., Robert Gates, Somaly Mam, John McCain, Stephenie Meyer, Robert Mugabe, Michael Phelps, Mikheil Saakashvili, The Somali Pirates, Dara Torres, Craig Venter and Rick Warren.

Biggest Loser 6 finale winner: who won Biggest Loser season 6?

Who won The Biggest Loser season 6? Michelle Aguilar was crowned queen of all losers this season and it's a title she'll wear proudly for many years, maybe for the rest of her life. In a season that saw many ups and downs among her competitors, Aguilar was crowned The Biggest Loser: Families' winner during last night's live finale broadcast of the reality weight-loss series' sixth season. The 26-year-old assistant director from Fort Worth, Texas started the competition at 242 pounds and lost an amazing 132 pounds for a 45.45% weight-loss percentage, claiming the show's $250,000 grand prize.

Being declared Biggest Loser winner is an amazing achievement and Michelle Aguilar was rightfully proud of her feat. "I'm number one!" Michelle screamed after her victory was
announced and the season's 15 other contestants began congratulating her as confetti rained down on the finale stage. Aguilar defeated Vicky Vilcan, a 37-year-old anesthetist from Houma, Louisiana, and Ed Brantley, a 31-year-old chef from Raleigh, North Carolina who won The Biggest Loser: Families' home viewer vote to determine the third sixth-season finalist.

Season after season, it is amazing to watch contestants shed so much weight, overcoming mental physical and mental barriers in the process. This season is no different as we again witnessed their struggles and triumphs. What they achieved is very admirable, considering that most of us know first hand how difficult it is to lose even just 10 pounds. They all deserve our congratulations ans admiration, not only the winners but all of the losers as well.

The next season of The Biggest Loser has already been announced, and it is set to premiere on January 6, 2009. Watch out for it!

To recap the results of The Biggest loser 6, here are the start and finish weights (and final weight-loss percentages) of the 12 other previously eliminated contestants - as well as the order in which they were booted from the competition.

Stacey Capers, a 33-year-old contract pricing analyst from Gainesville, VA began the competition at 221 pounds and lost 65 for a weight-loss percentage of 29.41%, while her husband Adam, a 39-year-old contracts manager, began the competition at 340 pounds before dropping 80 for a 23.53% Weight-loss percentage.

Tom "L.T." Desrochers Jr., a 22-year-old cab driver from Everett, MA, began the competition at 314 pounds before dropping 78 for a weight-loss percentage of 24.84%, while his father Tom Desrochers Sr., also a cab driver, began the competition at 357 pounds before losing 87 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 24.37%

Jerry Skeabeck, a 51-year-old police sergeant from Cleveland, OH began the competition at 380 pounds before losing 115 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 30.26%.

Shellay Cremen, a 51-year-old stay-at-home mom from Royal Oak, MI began the competition at 216 pounds before losing 74 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 34.26%.

Amy Parham, a 40-year-old real estate agent from Greer, SC began the competition at 229 pounds before dropping 105 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 45.85%, while her husband Phil began the competition at 331 pounds before losing 151 pounds for a percentage of 45.62%.

Brady Vilcan, a 36-year-old pharmacist from Houma, LA, began the competition at 341 pounds before losing 117 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 34.31%.

Coleen Skeabeck, a 23-year-old receptionist from Cleveland, OH entered the competition weighing 218 pounds before dropping 64 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 29.36%

Amy Cremen, a 26-year-old purchasing department representative from Auburn Hills, MI, entered the competition at 239 pounds before dropping 104 for a weight-loss percentage of 43.51%.

Renee Wilson, a 46-year-old event manager from Fort Worth, TX -- and the mother of the season's champion Michelle -- began the competition weighing 267 pounds before dropping 106 pounds for a weight-loss percentage of 39.7%.

House season 5 episode 12: 'Painless', House 5.12 (s05e12)

'Painless', that's the tile of the next episode of House (season 5 episode 12) featuring our lovable, grouchy doctor played by Hugh Laurie. Usually, there would be a plot summary of this upcoming episode (House 5.12) by now. However, since House will be taking a Christmas break, the summary is nowhere to be found. What we have, though, is a short promo video that I have posted below. However, there is very little that we can get from the this preview as well, nothing much about the story. What it does tackle is the change of schedule of our favorite medical drama. Instead of the usual Tuesday night slot, House MD has moved to Monday nights
effective its January air date. That means 'Painless' (House season 5 episode 12 / s05e12) will be seen on January 19, 2009 so mark your calendars.

I'm sure another episode preview will come up in the coming weeks, probably after the holidays. Rest assured that I will post it here so do check back for it. The same goes for the plot summary.

The full episode video of House 5.12: 'Painless' will also be posted on this page when it becomes available later. For now, all we can do is wait. You may want to check out past episodes of House during the holidays. Just click on the House episode link on the side bar.

internet or sex?: more women prefer internet over sex!

The internet has become an integral part of our lives. Ever since its introduction to the public in the 1990s, it has gradually risen to become a necessity. In some cases it has become more important then the telephone, or even television. We spend more and more time in front of our computers doing whatever can be done online - surfing, reading, shopping, writing, listening to music, watching movies and videos, etc. It seems we can no longer imagine life without the internet. But how important really is it? Would we choose the internet over food? How about sleep? Would we choose it over sex? Hmm.

To the first two questions above, my answer is in the affirmative. I have often missed eating a meal for the sake of spending more time online, either deliberately or otherwise. And I know I'm
not alone in this. Haven't we, at times, postponed eating because we just couldn't leave what we were doing online. Haven't we ignored the growls of out empty stomachs because we would lose the train of thought on the topic we were blogging about? The same is true with sleep. I often find myself yawning uncontrollably late at night because my body wants to get some rest, yet I continue with my blogging and web surfing. Sometimes I even wonder if there is a pill I can take to postpone sleep further. He he. The internet is oftentimes so engaging that it occupies the topmost rung in our activity ladder. However, with regards to the third question - internet or sex - the latter wins pants down hands down! give me an opportunity for sex and I would gladly leave my PC! I wouldn't even shut it down for it would take time. I would just stand up and leave! Ha ha. This would be a normal reaction of many men. But for women, I doubt it, especially after reading the results of a recent survey that says most women would rather go online than have sex!

Nearly one out of two women would rather give up sex for two weeks than go without the internet during the same period, according to a new survey. While 46 percent of the women surveyed were willing to engage in abstinence versus losing their internet, only 30 percent of the men surveyed were willing to do likewise.

The survey by Harris Interactive, which questioned 2,119 adults last month, found that the gap grew even wider for both men and woman who were 18 to 34 years old. For women, the percentage of those willing to skip the sheets in favor of the web rose to 49 percent, while it climbed to 39 percent for men. And for women 35 to 44 years old, the figure jumped to 52 percent. Still, the figures for the men surprised me. I expected a much lower percentage from our side of the fence. Hmm, they probably surveyed more priests than 'regular' guys! He he.

The survey confirms what we have been experiencing the past several years - the internet is fast becoming a dominant force in our daily lives. This will be both good and bad. Good for commerce, the economy and communications, but bad news for men. But then again, let's look at the brighter side. With the results of this survey, the internet may well be the solution to the spread of AIDS and overpopulation that we're looking for.

Heroes 'Recruit' webisode: watch Heroes 'The Recruit' webisode

"Heroes: The Recruit" Another volume of Heroes has ended with its latest episode today. Heroes: Duel is the last of the series for the volume 'Villains'. Volume four (Heroes: Fugitives) is scheduled to start in February 2009. To bridge the gap between now and then, Heroes webisodes will be introduced. This is also a way to bring in new characters to the series. 'Heroes: The Recruit' is the first of these webisodes.

Similar to the previous two webisodes that introduce new characters and people with special abilities, the Heroes: The Recruit will bring in Rachel Mills, a marine who is recruited by Pinehearst to be part of a
top-secret program. Rachel, played by Taylor Cole, is one of 50 Marines recruited by Pinehurst to be injected with a serum that will give them abilities to track and capture “specials.” However, something goes wrong in the very first webisode, and eventually Rachel is facing down Angela Petrelli.

The full 'Heroes: The Recruit' webisode went live today but the video isn't available for posting yet. However, rest assured that we will stop at nothing to secure a copy of it and post it here (as always). For now, here is a short preview of this latest Heroes webisode, 'The Recruit'.

'Heroes: The Recruit' is the first of these webisodes.

meet Shiloh Pepin, Mermaid Girl | what is Mermaid Syndrome?

Her name is Shiloh Pepin and she has become a celebrity of sorts after being featured in a recent documentary as the 'Little Mermaid Girl'. No, she didn't get that title because of her swimming skills or her love for the water but rather because of the condition. She has mermaid syndrome, other wise known as sirenomelia. It is a rare congenital deformity in which the legs are fused together, giving the the appearance of a mermaid.

Mermaid Syndrome (sirenomelia) is a very rare and often fatal deformity. It is a condition found in approximately one out of every 70,000 live births
and is usually fatal within a day or two of birth because of complications associated with abnormal kidney and bladder development and function. It results from "a failure of normal vascular supply from the lower aorta in utero. Maternal diabetes has been associated with caudal regression syndrome and sirenomelia, although this association is not generally accepted."

Shiloh Pepin is only one of three surviving sirenomelia (mermaid syndrome) patients who do not have the usual kidney and bladder complications. One of them is Milagros Cerrón Arauco of Peru born in 2004. Although most of Milagros’ internal organs, including her heart and lungs, are in perfect condition, she was born with serious internal defects, including a deformed left kidney and a very small right one located very low in her body. In addition, her digestive, urinary tracts and genitals share a single tube. The other one is Tiffany Yorks of the United States, born in 1988, who underwent successful surgery in order to separate her legs. She is the longest surviving sirenomelia patient to date.

Shiloh Pepin, the "mermaid girl", has undergone several operation to have come this far. She was born in Kennebunkport, Maine in August, 1999 with her lower extremities fused, a missing bladder, uterus, colon and vagina, with only one partial kidney and one ovary. Her parents initially anticipated she could expect only a few months of life. But thanks to an initial kidney transplant at 4 months of age, and a second kidney transplant in 2007, she is still fighting on.

Geroge W Bush Shoe Attack: shoes thrown at Bush in Iraq (video)

After successfully sneaking out of the United States and making a rare daytime landing in Iraq, George W. Bush didn't exactly expect the welcome he received. In what critics say was a victory lap of a visit, Bush was the recipient of a nasty shoe throwing incident during his press conference with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. The US president was called a "dog" and accorded the supreme insult in Muslim culture. In a sign of lingering anger over the war that will define the Republican president's foreign policy legacy, an Iraqi journalist shouted in Arabic "this is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog," and hurled his shoes at Bush during the news conference.

Throwing shoes at somebody is a supreme insult in the Middle East. The president, however, showed he is still able to dodge and weave quite well with the shoe toss. The first shoe was heading straight for the head of George W. Bush but he made a quick move to get out of the way. Maliki tried to block the second shoe which only narrowly missed its mark.

Speaking about the incident later, George W. Bush didn't quite get the insult that was thrown at him, or was he just trying to save face. "It's like going to a political rally and have people yell at you. It's a way for people to draw attention," Bush said. "I don't know what the guy's cause was. I didn't feel the least bit threatened by it." Yeah, right. Anyone who gets a shoe, or anything for that matter, thrown at him must feel threatened, disrespected and insulted. I certainly would. (You can watch the video below.)

Bush's fleeting visit to Baghdad was aimed at marking the recent passage of a U.S.-Iraq security pact that paves the way for U.S. troops to pull out of Iraqi cities by July next year and withdraw completely by the end of 2011. It was also meant to hail a recent sharp fall in the sectarian violence and insurgency that raged after the 2003 U.S. invasion to topple Saddam Hussein, and to show support for Iraqi police and soldiers as they take on increasing responsibility.

Asked whether he had come to Iraq on a victory lap, Bush said: "No, I consider it an important step on the road toward an Iraq that can sustain itself, govern itself and defend itself. There's still more work to be done. The war is not over."

However, whatever was said or done in his Iraq visit, and whatever significance it may have for him and his administration, all of these have been overshadowed by the shoe throwing incident. The video has become a hit on YouTube and it will be the subject of ridicule in late night talk shows for days to come. Watch out for it!

Prison Break season 4 episode 15: Prison Break 4.15 (s04e15)

'Going Under': Prison Break season 4 episode 15 (s04e15) What will happen to Michael? Will the surgery be successful or will it leave him impaired? And what about Scylla? Will Mahone and Lincoln stop Gretchen before Scylla is lost forever? These are just some of the questions that need answers in this episode of Prison Break 4.15: Going Under, another exciting installment of the series this season. Michael finally goes under the knife but the flatline at the end of the preview is something very intriguing. Of course we know that he won't die in this operation as he is the central character of the story. But the question is, what will that flatline lead to?

Update: Prison Break season 4 episode 15: 'Going Under' is now available at the bottom of this post. My apologies for the delay. Enjoy watching it!

Meanwhile, Wheeler and Lang transport Mahone to prison; and as Self and Gretchen await their prospective customer, Gretchen gets a phone call from her sister that's both reassuring and troubling. During surgery, Michael (who's conscious) gets unlikely help in unraveling the mystery of Scylla.

Survivor Gabon season finale winner | who won Survivor Gabon?

Who won Survivor Gabon? Matty? Bob? Sugar? Nobody, yet. The two-hour Survivor Gabon season finale (episode 13) will be airing in a few hours time and that's when we'll find out who will be declared as the Survivor Gabon winner / Sole Survivor.

With the exit of Crystal during the last episode, we're now left with five. Five equally capable competitors - Matty, Sugar, Bob, Kenny and Susie. If you ask me, my money is on Bob. At his age (no insult intended), he has proven that he is a real survivor, even winning challenges and beating his much younger rivals in the process. But it's not up to me, or us. The winner will be determined by the jury of castaways and I smell payback here.

UPDATE: The results are in , and it's BOB by a vote of 4-3 over, are you ready for this, Susie! Yup, Susie almost won, and I almost had a heart attack! I still can't believe the jury almost made the biggest mistake in Survivor history by letting an almost-invisible-contestant win!

With the way Ken has sneakily played this game, I don't think he'll get many votes (if at all) from the jury. Same goes for Sugar because she is part of that alliance Matty called 'The Evil Three' (Kenny, Crystal and Sugar). However, with the way she played in the previous episode by breaking away from that alliance - saving Matty from elimination by giving him her immunity and convincing Bob not to give his immunity to Ken - will the jury give her another chance, or is it a bit too late? We'll have to wait and see. As for Susie, I don't think she has a chance. Can anybody win Survivor by playing almost invisibly all season long? I don't think so. That leaves Matty and Bob.

I really thinks it's a battle between these two. I think the jury appreciates a solid player so I think it's a toss up between Bob and Matty. Well, we only have a few hours to wait before we find out who the winner is this season. Let's all watch the finale and the reunion episode as we welcome the winner and Sole Survivor of Survivor Gabon.

For those who may want to refresh their memory with what happened during Survivor Gabon episode 13, here is a recap courtesy of Wikipedia. I have also posted a preview clip of the finale.

* Immunity Challenge: The castaways would have to dig a passage under a wall, cross a maze made out of planks, and untie a series of knots that would open a gate that lead to a maze with 25 Gabonese huts. In three of the huts would be a bag of puzzle pieces. One puzzle bag at a time would need to be retrieved from the maze and dropped off at the finish platform. Once all three bags were retrieved, the first castaway to correctly assemble the puzzle would win.

Ken felt that Bob reneged on his deal to hand over the immunity necklace at the last Tribal Concil. Sugar worked on re-establishing Ken's trust in her even as she plotted with Bob to vote out Susie and Ken next. At the Immunity Challenge, Bob narrowly beat Sugar, winning immunity for the third straight time and the fifth consecutive challenge. At Tribal Council, Ken felt confident going into Tribal Council that he would not be voted out, but that confidence was misplaced as he was voted out 4-1.

* Immunity Challenge: The castaways would be given 200 wooden tiles. The first castaway to use the tiles to build a house of cards 10 feet (3.0 m) tall would win. If after 30 minutes, no castaway has built the house of cards to over 10 feet (3.0 m) tall, the castaway who builds the tallest house of cards at the end of the time limit would win.

Before the start of the final Immunity Challenge, the Final Four took the traditional journey honoring the castaways voted out before them. Susie broke Bob's challenge winning streak by having built the tallest house of cards after 30 minutes. Sugar thought about forcing a tie at the next Tribal Council due to her loyalty towards Bob for being a father figure. Bob went off into the trees to practice starting a fire, anticipating a fire making tiebreaker challenge. At Tribal Council, Sugar did force a 2-2 tie between Bob and Matty. The tiebreaker challenge was fire making, which Bob won after resuscitating his initial fire and Matty never starting a fire.

The Final Three spent their last day at camp eating the traditional feast and burning down one of the huts at the campsite. At the final Tribal Council, Charlie asked Sugar and Susie why they felt they should be voted at the "top of the totem pole" even though they were ranked the second lowest and lowest, respectively, among their tribes before the first tribal switch. He asked Bob if the "intimate cuddling and spooning all night long" was more enjoyable than he would liked to admit. Crystal asked no question of Susie, asked Bob to tell her something that Sugar didn't tell him to do, and asked Sugar why she voted her out. Ken asked Susie why she thought she deserved the million dollars and his vote, asked Sugar why she back stabbed him, and Bob about their deal over the immunity necklace. Corinne asked Susie if she would be willing to have her vocal cords removed if she were to win the million dollars. She asked Bob to show the nasty side of Bob and make her believe that he did not like Sugar. She did not ask a question to Sugar, but instead took the opportunity to criticize her. Marcus asked no questions of Susie, what Sugar would do to honor her deceased father if she were to win, and for Bob to give one example of a situation were he was responsible for his decisions. Randy asked Susie to elaborate on the time that Susie said she felt sorry for him and Sugar and Bob if they considered the consequences of putting him on the jury when they gave him the fake Hidden Immunity Idol. Matty asked Susie to tell him why Bob and Sugar were less deserving that she was of the million dollars, Sugar to reveal something that she felt that she did was evil, and Bob why Sugar and Susie were more deserving of the million dollar prize that he was. In the end, the jury voted Bob the Sole Survivor with a vote of 4-3-0 over Susie. In addition, Bob won the 'Sprint Survivor of the Season' award, earning the fan's vote over Sugar and Matty.
