Reckitt Benckiser to buy Paras Pharma:

In what could be billed as the second biggest pharma takeover bid this year, Reckitt Benckiser, the world’s biggest maker of household cleaners, has agreed to buy the Indian ointments and personal care firm Paras Pharma for Rs 3,260 crore ($ 724 million).

Paras, an Ahmedabad- based privately- held firm, makes BoroSoft moisturising skin cream and Zatak deodorant, non-prescription (or over- the- counter) medications like Moov – pain relief ointment, Krack – heel care lotion and D’Cold – cold remedy.

It also makes prickly heat powder, Dermicool, and Itch Guard & Ring Guard anti- fungal creams, besides hair gel and deodorant products branded Set Wet.

Reckitt is well known for its products Dettol, antiseptic liquid and soaps, besides Veet, hair remover, Strepsils, throat lozenges, and Mortein, pest control aerosol sprays and mosquito repellents. The firm is said to have piped Glaxo- SmithKline Plc, Sanofi- Aventis, Novartis AG and Johnson & Johnson, which all had submitted concrete bids to acquire majority stake in Paras.

This deal comes within seven months of Abbott Laboratories Inc’s $3.7- billion deal (over Rs 15,000 crore) in May for the branded generic drugs operations of India’s Piramal Healthcare, highlighting rising foreign interest in Indian pharma companies.

Reckitt would acquire a 63 per cent stake in Paras from Actis LLP. Sequoia Capital and the remaining Paras shareholders, including that of the company’s founder, Girish Patel and his family, would also sell their stakes to the UKheadquartered company.

An analyst who did not wish to be named said that the price was a bit on the higher side at 8.2 times revenues and 30.7 times EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation).

Paras clocked about Rs 400 crore of sales last fiscal.

Developing markets, which include India, Latin America, Africa, Middle East and Asia, account for about a fifth of Reckitt’s revenue. The group has been investing in the fastgrowing non- prescription pharma segment over the last four years, buying Boots’ over- the- counter business in 2006, the USbased Adams cough medicines company in 2008 and earlier this year the SSL Durex condoms group.

American Airlines Inspecting 87 Boeing 757 Aircraft:

American Airlines is inspecting two-thirds of its Boeing 757 fleet after a hole ripped open in October on one of its 757s flying from Miami to Boston.

The Fort Worth-based carrier is checking 87 of its 124 Boeing 757 aircraft based on a service bulletin issued by Boeing, airline spokesman Tim Smith said.

Close to half the inspections have been completed, Smith said.

“We have been accomplishing the inspections expeditiously as the aircraft flow through our maintenance facilities for other routine maintenance,” Smith said. “There is nothing we can report at this time as to any findings related to the inspections.”

On Oct. 26, a 1-by-2-foot hole in a Boeing 757-200 aircraft at 31,000 feet opened just above the passenger loading door on the left side near the front of the aircraft. The cabin lost pressure and the plane made an emergency landing in Miami.

Afterward, the plane was grounded as inspectors worked to determine what caused the hole and whether metal fatigue was at fault.

Boeing issued its service bulletin Nov. 22, asking operators to inspect a portion of the upward fuselage of some 757s, Boeing spokeswoman Julie O’Donnell said.

The company said 667 airplanes worldwide are affected by the bulletin.

The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to make Boeing’s bulletin inspections mandatory soon and is preparing an airworthiness directive for operators of the Boeing 757.

On Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the inspections had begun and said government investigators have been looking at the American accident, as well as cracks found on a United Airlines 757, also in October.

Earlier this year, the FAA required airlines to check for cracks in 135 Boeing 737s after government safety inspectors determined that metal fatigue caused a Southwest Airlines plane’s fuselage to rip at 35,000 feet in July 2009.

IGNOU Gets 400 New Centres For Bihar Education

Indira Gandhi National Open University aka IGNOU shall start training centers at 400 places in the Bihar state. These will be infrastructured with computer laboratories to offer distance education via information technology to the rural parts of the State. In addiditon to this, it is valued that during the year 2009-10, 25,000 government officials shall be coached by IGNOU.

Lately, the Government of Bihar contracted an MoU for implementation of state sponsored projects with IGNOU,called ‘Samarth’, a debut of its type endeavour in the nation. Under Samarth , IGNOU has been selected as the Knowledge Partner of the  Bihar state. This Project is an integration of IGNOU’s academic excellence and delivery of market driven vocational courses , for the youngsters of Bihar. These programmes will not only make them become competitively talented, on par with the workforce of other states,  but also aid Bihar  to importantly enhance its Human Development Index. This Project has been unanimously authorized by the Board of Management aka BOM of the University.

IGNOU has been achieved imparting Diplomas in Primary Training to thousands  of Primary School Teachers working with the Bihar Government. The Government is very motivated on professionally training their employed teachers since the State is applying different national and state level school education schemes in a big way, to enhance the delivery of education, both at the primary and the secondary levels.

I have been thru the messgs. and am impressed that in the 8 scraps it sums up (briefly) the Entrepreneurship story of our country. I like the way Ranjith has put his views on the issue.

I myself have taken the plunge into Entrepreneurship 2.5 yrs back and let me tell you the apprehensions, hardwork, risk, etc. stories are all true, but the gigger truth is that this phase in the country is right to take the step and start implementing ones dream.

All said and done Passion, Belief, Clear and Focussed goal takes you to a level. Surrounding oneself with bright, sincere, smart and likeminded people helps sound networking for good ideation and sharing. Then comes the phase when one needs to make moves like a surgon – precision and judicious actions in a very well thought of plan moves you on.

I am currently in the stage where I do feel the need to look out share and know that I am not the only one in a particular phase of an Entrepreneure’s life.

Here is the latest news about the Indian Air Force MI-26 Helicopter that was crashed on 14th December 2010 while taking off from the Jammu Air Force Station.

In the IAF MI-26 Helicopter 8 defence personnel including crew members were injured and all of them has taken to the Military Hospital located at Satwari.

The IAF MI-26 Helicopter was carrying with machinery for laying a railway track in far off Reasi district.

Jammu Airport also known as Satwari Airport is an airport in Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, India.
