the Michelle Obama inaugural gown secrecy: What will she wear?

What gown will Michelle Obama wear? Who designed Michelle Obama's inaugural gown? What will the gown be like? These are just some of the questions fashionistas and observers are asking as the inauguration of Barack Obama nears. While the focus of the inauguration will be on the President-elect, observers cannot help but wonder how his stylish wife will look on that historic day.

The interest is fever-pitch. According to news reports, several agencies and fashion magazines have run contests and surveys on what the incoming First Lady would wear and the response has been

very impressive - proof of the public's keen interest on the subject. WWD invited several designers to present their dream Michelle Obama inaugural gowns, featuring them on their site, and has received three to four millions hits. The Washington Post launched a design contest for Michelle Obama's inaugural gown and received more than 200 entries.

Ever since Barack Obama announced his intention to run for president people have taken notice of Michelle Obama and her sense of style. Fashion observers have described it as a modern, elegant style. Throughout the campaign, she has demonstrated her fashion consistency, seamlessly shifting between designer attires from Chicago-based designers like Maria Pinto, Thakoon and Narciso Rodriguez, and mass market brands such as H&M, J. Crew and Gap. This has earned her more fashion raves.

Interest on Michelle Obama and her style sense in understandable. After all, the White House hasn't seen a stylish First Lady in the past twenty years. Laura Bush was simple, Hillary Clinton's style has been described as "prudish" (eight years of pantsuits!) and, besides the pearls, Barabara Bush was forgettable. It's the first time in many years that a woman of style will occupy the White House.

Predictions are that Michelle Obama's gown will be simple but elegant, and designed by an American. Aides have been mum about the issue and this has spurred more interest and speculation. Other First Ladies' gowns from previous administrations have been revealed days before the inauguration, but not this one. It will remain a secret until inauguration day.
